Technological proficiency is one of the skills that may have to be rated. To do this effectively, an employee needs to maintain a positive professional tone when writing the evaluation.

Many jobs require a certain level of proficiency in the use of technological tools, although specific types of technology vary among industries. For example, the employees at a manufacturing plant use different technology than a book publisher or software developer. A self-evaluation form should only require an employee to rate those technological skills that are applicable to a current job description.

Aptitude

In addition to knowing how to use a particular type of technology, many jobs may require an employee to adapt quickly to changing situations. For example, an employee in an information technology department may be required to test various types of software or hardware tools before the organization purchases that specific product and installs it throughout the company. In this case, the employee must be able to learn new tools very quickly. On the other hand, an employee in the finance department may only be required to master the use of a spreadsheet program.

Negative Evaluation

Evaluating yourself is not an easy task. You hate to say anything negative, but you know that you need to give a well-rounded evaluation or your manager will do it for you. It's better to pick your own phrases that lend a positive slant to a negative situation; otherwise, your manager may miss the growth opportunities that the skill deficiency presents. For example, rather than saying you have difficulty learning how to use a particular software program or other type of technology, request additional training. This is positive and indicates a willingness to learn.

Positive Evaluation

Reviews are easier if you are proficient in a specific area of concern. For example, you can assert that you are quick to learn new technologies, or that you assist other employees who are struggling with the technology. This doesn't sound like bragging -- as long as it's true -- and it emphasizes your importance to the company.
